چکیده

CoKu Tau/4 has been labeled as one of the very few known transition disk objects—disks around young stars that have their inner disks cleared of dust, arguably as a result of planetary formation. We report aperture-masking interferometry and adaptive optics imaging observations showing that CoKu Tau/4 is in fact a near-equal binary star of projected separation ∼53 mas (∼8 AU). The spectral energy distribution of the disk is then naturally explained by the inner truncation of the disk through gravitational interactions with the binary star system. We discuss the possibility that such “unseen” binary companions could cause other circumbinary disks to be labeled as transitional. Subject heading: stars: low-mass, brown dwarfs

Disks in the UY Aurigae binary

We report interferometric images of the UY Aur binary in 13CO J = 1→0 and J = 2→1 which reveal evidence for a large (≥ 20′′) circumbinary disk around the two pre-mainsequence stars. This is the second detection of a circumbinary disk around T Tauri stars. A Keplerian rotation curve around a central mass of ∼1.2M provides a good fit to the velocity data. However, 13CO emission at a systemic velo...

Detection of H2 pure rotational line emission from the GG Tau binary system

We present the first detection of the low-lying pure rotational emission lines of H2 from circumstellar disks around T Tauri stars, using the Short Wavelength Spectrometer on the Infrared Space Observatory. These lines provide a direct measure of the total amount of warm molecular gas in disks. The J=2→0 S(0) line at 28.218 μm and the J=3→1 S(1) line at 17.035 μm have been observed toward the d...

We present the first Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph 11 observations of the disks around classical T Tauri stars: spectra in the 5.2-30 µm range of six stars. The spectra are dominated by emission features from amorphous silicate dust, and a continuous component from 5 to 8 µm that in most cases comprises an excess above the photosphere throughout our spectral range. There is considerable variati...

N ov 2 00 4 Submillimeter Array Observations of Disks in the SR 24 Multiple Star System

We present high-resolution aperture synthesis images from the Submillimeter Array of the 225GHz (1.3mm) continuum and CO J = 2 − 1 line emission from the disks around components of the hierarchical triple system SR 24, located in the Ophiuchus star-forming region. The most widely separated component, SR 24 S (with a projected semimajor axis a = 832AU), has a circumstellar disk with properties t...

Evolution of irradiated Circumbinary Disks

We study the evolution and emission of circumbinary disks around close classical T Tauri binary systems. High resolution numerical hydrodynamical simulations are employed to model a system consisting of a central eccentric binary star within an irradiated accretion disk. A detailed energy balance including viscous heating, radiative cooling and irradiation from the central star is applied to ca...
